Send Flowers to Umeå, Sweden

Umeå is the largest city in northern Sweden, on the Ume river near the Gulf of Bothnia, about 600 kilometres north of Stockholm. Known as the city of birches, it has a major university and hospital and was European Capital of Culture in 2014. Families abroad send flowers to its students and residents for birthdays, new babies and condolences.

Swedish Mother's Day on the last Sunday of May arrives when the birches are just coming into leaf in Umeå. Midsommar is the great summer festival, with flower crowns and the light that never fades at this latitude. Funeral flowers with a ribbon are sent to the chapel in advance.

Order before midnight local time and delivery is made the following day. The florist phones the recipient, so a mobile number is required, and finds another time if nobody is in. Roses, lilies, mixed bouquets and potted plants are stocked in Umeå; for outlying villages the florist may suggest a closely equivalent arrangement if a flower is not available.
